Kampala city is not only Uganda’s capital but also the largest urban center in the city bustling with lots of small and large businesses both privately & government-owned. The ever-busy streets of Kampala paint the way of life of the people in the city while the cultural & political sites depict the rich history of Uganda. If you plan on exploring the city on a business or leisure holiday, then you will need to rent a car in Kampala online for a comfortable and safe private trip.

Before you decide to self drive Kampala city this season, We put together a few tips to keep you safe side of the law and also protect you as well during your road trip.

Drivers License – This is by far the most important document a driver should always carry and check before driving off to any destination as it shows if you are verified to drive or not. In case of any stopover for a particular reason, the officer will always first ask for the driver’s permit or license hence don’t fall on the wrong side of the law and miss one during a traffic stop. Tourists driving in a foreign country always have to possess an International Driver’s License or else face a traffic charge.

Stay on The left side – Uganda is one of the left-hand side driving countries as are all the others that were colonized by the British Empire. The majority if not all cars imported in Uganda allow drivers to seat on the right side of the vehicle and by law all cars on road should maintain the left side unless when overtaking.

Don’t park anywhere – The busy streets of Kampala are not only crowded by pedestrians, there is a car parked literally everywhere you pass but that doesn’t mean you also go ahead and park. Only park in reserved places for example banks, shopping malls, hotels, apartments among other places that offer free ample parking space. You risk getting penalized or getting robbed if you just park anywhere you feel like.

Drive slow – Kampala is a very busy city crowded by pedestrians and motorists of all kinds and so you have to be careful not to collide or knock down any of the two as you risk a huge traffic penalty or even worse, fatal accident. There is a lot of traffic in the city center but loosens up as you go to the suburbs, drive at minimal speed and save a life today.

Avoid the night – The government imposed a 7pm lockdown as a way of curbing the Corona virus meaning both non-driver and drivers are not supposed to be on the road at least by 8pm. However, even when the curfew is lifted, please avoid driving at night most especially if you are a first-time visitor. The risks of getting robbed or causing an accident greatly increase when the sun goes down.

Book a suitable car – Last but not least, always make sure you rent a car in Kampala that suits your travel budget and needs, a car that can fit the number of people you are traveling with but doesn’t dig too deep into your pockets. If you are traveling alone, then a simple SUV like a Rav4 will do the job but if it’s a small group or family, then you should consider getting a minivan or bus for the road trip and save money while getting that comfortable road trip in the heart of Uganda.
